Ecloga XI is a theatrical tribute to the Venetian poet Andrea Zanzotto. The title refers to the collection of verses IX Ecloghe, which Zanzotto published in 1962, defined by Zanzotto himself as “a presumptuous homage to the great soul of Virgil” (a definition that Anagoor recalls in the subtitle).

The show reflects on the ecological and anthropological crisis of our time through a scenic language that focuses on sound, word and painting. At the center of the scene is the painting Storm by Giorgione, deprived of human figures, symbol of an emptied landscape.

The voice of Zanzotto crosses the present like a prophecy, his entire work reveals a complex but not obscure nature: the poet of the landscape, through the vision of the devastation of the landscape and the crisis of the interior landscape, of the psyche and of the language, grasps and connects the causes and effects of a pain that makes one mute, soon rising as a civil and historical force. The poet captures and illuminates the hell into which we have fallen and yet, stubbornly, holds the fire of a child’s hope.

IN A NUTSHELL

Ecloga XI is Anagoor’s visionary homage to the poet Andrea Zanzotto: a journey between poetry and landscape, guided by his prophetic voice. The painting, Storm by Giorgione dominates the scene, emptied of human figures. A journey through verses and shadows, where Zanzotto becomes the Virgil of our time.

Founded by Simone Derai and Paola Dallan in Castelfranco Veneto in 2000, the company Anagoor immediately appeared as an experiment in the community. A continuous laboratory, open to professionals and beginners, Anagoor is the student of a creation open to the city and its different generations. Anagoor’s theatre responds to an iconic aesthetic that precipitates into different formats where performing art, philosophy, literature and hypermedia scene enter into dialogue, demanding however, with force and by virtue of the nature of this art, to remain theatre. Since 2008 Anagoor has had its headquarters at La Conigliera, a rabbit farm converted into an atelier and since 2010 it has been part of the Fies Factory project of Centrale Fies – art work space.

Andrea Zanzotto was a great Italian poet of the twentieth century. Born in Pieve di Soligo, Veneto, he developed a complex poetic language, rich in linguistic experimentation and profound reflections on landscape, memory and the crisis of modernity.

His poetry is often imbued with tensions between nature and devastation, beauty and loss, with a style that crosses classical lyricism and avant-garde. Very attached to his land, Zanzotto has been able to transform the dialect, the language and the history of the Venetian landscape into tools of metaphysical and civil investigation.
