A bizarre and fantastic apologue, able to penetrate deeply, albeit in a light and unsettling way, the folds of our present time. A powerful reflection, disguised as a bizarre comedy, on the primary necessity for hope that each of us gives to dreaming, or to a God, who perhaps exists.
Mario Bianchi, Krapp’s Last Post
Nothing has ever happened to Petronia. The inhabitants are 73, since the beginnings of time. Nobody was born and nobody dies, because in the stone country there is no water, so there is no life. As far as she can remember, Pania awaits a child who will never give birth. Her sister Amita, the only woman in the country left alone, without a husband, dreams of ending her suffering, but she will never be able to do it. The only task granted to the inhabitants of the country is to watch a TV series, broadcasted as well since the beginnings of time. One day, however, Amita, in love with the series’ protagonist, succeeds, in a fury of kisses, to tear him out from his reality and take him into her own. Jhonny Water arrives in Petronia. He is a sailor and brings water with him.
The balance of the country shifts. Things start to happen. Pania gives birth, Amita falls in love. The other inhabitants of Petronia discover passions, revenge, guilt, desires, joy. Life erupts. And the fault is due to the stranger who came from the sea.
With their usual mixture of livid comedy and poetic depth, Maniaci d’Amore offer an amusing, light but very rigorous dramaturgy. A reflection on the fear of what is different, of life and of the divine, inspired by the texts of Florensky, Genet and Pirandello.
